China Vangsness has a passion for working with people struggling with drug and alcohol addiction, anxiety, depression, infidelity issues, and relationship problems. She has worked as a therapist in rehabilitation settings, private practice and therapy centers for the past 10 years.
China has been clinical director at Sea Change Recovery for the past 4 years. She believes the most effective approach to treating addiction is by combining therapy with the 12-step recovery model. Working at Sea Change Recovery is especially meaningful for China because of her belief in the multi-dimensional treatment of addiction. Promoting mental health, physical, emotional and spiritual healing for clients and their families creates an environment in which individuals can thrive on their road to recovery.
China earned her Master’s Degree in Clinical Psychology from Antioch University and has extensive experience working with teens, adults, couples and families. She began her career helping juvenile inmates and has worked with clients challenged by recent HIV diagnosis, PTSD, anxiety, substance abuse, depression, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Through the process of deconstructing these stories, meaning can be revealed and reclaimed.
The goal.
China has formal training is in postmodern therapies, specifically narrative and solution-oriented therapy. She believes that through the identification and telling of individual stories, problems can be transformed and overcome. By deep examination, people can begin to understand how problems have operated in their lives and made claims on their identity. Through the process of deconstructing these stories, meaning can be revealed and reclaimed. When insight is gained through therapy, people can begin to change their thinking and behavior. Doing things differently (whether it’s getting sober or getting out of bed) helps people feel better because their actions match up with who they want to be, with who they really are. China believes there is no one way to live a life or practice therapy and brings herself into each unique therapeutic relationship ready to listen and help people move from where they are to where they want to be.
